On a serious note, several third grade students wrote letters to Prime Minister Gilani expressing their concerns about the plight of children forced to do hard labor. The Prime Minister wrote a response to these letters that appeared in several newspapers. Prime Minister Gilani stated that he appreciated the maturity of the students’ ideas and wanted the students to know that the government is taking steps to ensure that every child goes to school and stressed the importance of social awareness as a means to stop child labor. Well done grade three.
What are the Iowas?
As you are aware of, we are giving the Iowa Standardized Testing for Grades 3 and 5 this week. The primary purpose of these standardized achievement tests is to provide information that can be used to improve instruction and student learning. These tests can be used in selecting learning targets and approaches, designing or choosing instructional materials, and creating an effective learning environment.
We would like your support in reducing student’s absences and tardiness during the testing days. It is also important that students keep a routine during these days with emphasis on maintaining normal bedtime hours, normal breakfast, etc. Thank you for making sure your student is well rested and in attendance for this important testing.

Today, grade three students transported us back in time, when mighty rulers held the power of life or death. The setting was India, the themes were Truth, Justice and Equality. By performing Indian folktales, the performers taught the audience how even mighty rulers were able to change the lives of their subjects for the better by using truth, justice and equality. Great job grade three!

On March 12, the elementary school successfully completed its second Student Led Conferencesessionof this school year. Student-Led Conferences allow students to take the lead by sharing samples of their course work, discussing interests and goals, and working together with their parents on a preliminary plan for the balance of the school year and beyond. Student-led conferences were designed to achieve one or more of the following goals:
• to encourage students to accept personal responsibility for their academic performance
• to teach students the process of self-evaluation
• to facilitate the development of students’ organizational and oral communication skills and to increase their self-confidence;
• to encourage students, parents, and teachers to engage in open and honest dialogue
• to increase parent attendance at conferences.
I was able to view some wonderful student presentations, and I think the conferences were a great success. A fantastic job everyone!
